Portfolio Overview

The whole comment thing is something I tried to avoid for a long time. First I don't really care about comments for quite a few reasons but mostly because developing a comment system with all the bells and whistles takes time and time is precious these days.

Along came Disqus which is quite an interesting commenting platform or system. Most interesting, it was actually quite easy to integrate it into my framework.

I hate comments

No, I don't really hate comments but I don't really care much about most comments. For several reasons.

The pat on your back

I think many people like the comment box on their blog or website because they need a pat on their back and like to hear how awesome they are and how excellent their work is. I don't need it.

Not because I already know that I am awesome but because I know that there is an equal or even greater number who thinks quite the opposite.

Plus, not much of a surprise, not many people add these sort of comments anyway. They do not care! I mean, why would I, why would you?

I hate you

Many people will hate you, or me. I don't know why and I don't really care. It's a free world but the problem with people who hate you don't bother to really tell you not to mention like to discuss with you why they hate you. They just tell you, "I hate you". Ooh, look a comment box, lets write something to tell him that I hate you.

I am better than you

This is my favorite. If I made a mistake in my article I am more than glad to hear about and make a correction but most people don't do that. They add stuff that is only remotely related to the current topic and they just like to tell you how awesome they are and how stupid you are. Seriously? Again, if there is an error I am fine with that when it is pointed out but I am not fine with off topic comments.

Eat my spam

And last but not least we have spam. Some write earnest comments but it's actually about spreading their word, aka services and work. Adding the link for their website is the key message. Plus all the other spam.

What about Disqus

So what is different about Disqus? Not much actually.

Because I don't really care about comments I pushed the developing part for comments aside. When I added Facebook support I looked into their comment system and because it wasn't too difficult to implement I gave it a try. The whole moderation part sucks immensely, though. Fortunately only two haters commented in about three months.

Disqus seems to have a pretty straight forward moderation and management system for the comments. So, lets see how that will work. Most important, though, implementing the whole system into my framework is pretty simple.

Add forum name

When you register with Disqus you will get a so called "Forum Name". All it takes now in my framework is this forum name. I already prepared a comments widget with Facebook comments and just needed to add a few lines of code. Now you just add the forum name to the config and the Disqus JavaScript is added to the pages. The JavaScript and your configuration in Disqus takes care of anything else.

Competition

What about other commenting systems. I am also looking into other commenting systems now and how to integrate them into my framework. There are only two systems I am aware of and looking into: IntenseDebate and Livefyre. If you know about other interesting commenting systems let me know and send me a message my Contact form.
