About: Me and My Business

About my business

In General

In general terms my business is about web design and/or web development.

To be more specific

There is so much change in the IT business it is difficult—if not impossible—to say what I do today will be the same I do in, lets say, two years from now.

In Transition

Right now I am in some sort of a transition. I have a strong background in support, engineering of Windows Servers, web servers, web applications, server technology and networks. These things required a lot of attention and knowledge in the past. Nowadays, you plug them in, run the installation program or sign up for the service and like magic it just work. Amazing! Not surprisingly, one of my former employees coined the term commodities for the services we provide to customers. Frankly, I was worried and horrified!

According to my dictionary a commodity is "something useful that can be turned to commercial or other advantage". Okay, we all have to make money but if you work at the edge of technology and you like that you simply fear when your profession becomes a commodity.

So, with my business I like to stay at the edge of technology. By that I don't mean like early adopters but not engage or support technology that is considered "outdated".

DIY (Do it yourself)

Thanks to everything becoming a commodity many people think they can ditch the tech guy. You can install/maintain your own web server and configure some applications yourself. This might be true and go well for a while but then suddenly things go south. That's about the time where I like to step in. When you are desperate and the company who sold you the commodity tells you they cannot help you or that your problem is not supported.

I would love to help you. You will probably not like what I will find and say. You will not like what I charge either but I will promise you that it will work and probably better than ever before.

Your Growing Business

Most companies begin very little as a one man or woman shop, in the basement, the garage or where you can fit your business. You don't really have any money for a web site but you need one and the commodity solution was just about right at that moment. While you were waiting for your next client you even had time to figure it out to some degree.

Now your business has grown and the commodity shows its limitations and things are not that easy anymore. Not to mention that your time is more precious to your clients than waiting on some support hotline. That's about the time where I like to step in. When you are desperate and the company who sold you the commodity tells you they cannot help you or that your problem is not supported.

Yeah, I know it is the same as above but I would love to help you with your next step. The problem with many of this easy-peasy commodity solutions is that they are designed to do just certain things and they usually do it fairly well but that is it!

If you need to grow and expand your web site you will find the limitations of the commodity. Scalability is the key word here and very often is not part of the solution. What is even worse is that most providers of these solutions do not offer the next step.
